Flash flood warnings in effect in Watsonville

Posted: Tuesday, Jan 10th, 2017

WATSONVILLE — With heavy rains battering the region, the City of Watsonville issued flash flood warnings Tuesday night for residents living near the Pajaro River, as well as Salsipuedes and Corralitos creeks.

City Manager Charles Montoya announced during Tuesday night’s City Council meeting that the city has activated its emergency operations center. No evacuations are currently in effect.

The warnings are expected to last until Wednesday.

City officials are urging residents to stay away from creeks and stream banks, as water may rise quickly. The soaked banks often become unstable due to heavy rainfall and can suddenly give way.

Information can be found at:

• City of Watsonville: Be prepared for a flood at www.cityofwatsonville.org/city-of-watsonville/be-prepared-for-a-flood

• County Office of Emergency Service at: www.co.santa-cruz.ca.us/Departments/EmergencyServices.aspx

Sandbags can be picked up at Fire Station #1, 15 Second St., and Home Depot, 355 South Green Valley Road.

Montoya added that a number of power outages have been reported in the East Lake Avenue area. Residents can look up current PG&E power outages at www.pge.com/outages, or call the 24-hour hotline at 800-743-5002.
