George Jesus Hernandez, aged 66, of Alzey, Germany, passed away on January 24, 2017, after a short and unexpected illness. George was born in San Mateo, CA, and grew up in Watsonville, CA. He graduated from Watsonville High School in 1969. In 1970 he joined the US Army and was stationed at Ft Ord, CA before eventually being sent to Germany. It was there that he met his future bride, Marie Lore Hensel, of Germany. They were married on Dec 17, 1971. George made Alzey his permanent home with Marie, and together they raised a son, Mike. After George was discharged from the Army, he worked for 40 years in the car building industry for Opel, a German subsidiary of General Motors.
George enjoyed music and especially liked James Brown and many other soul artists. He was an avid sports fan and rooted for the San Francisco 49ers and San Francisco Giants. He also enjoyed watching Soccer and Tennis. He was a fun loving person and always enjoyed a good laugh. George and Marie enjoyed traveling, especially after retirement, and made several trips including out of the country visits to Turkey, Dubai, and Egypt. Whenever he could, he most enjoyed returning to the United States to visit with his family, and also his friends from the old neighborhood.
George was loved by many and always made sure he stayed in contact with his family in the U.S. He was a loving and dedicated husband and father, a beloved grandfather, a good brother, brother-in-law, uncle, and friend. He was preceded in death by his mother Marie Ledesma; sister Dora Slife; nephew Clint Walker; niece Stacy Barraza; aunts and uncles.
He is survived by his wife Marie Lore Hernandez; his son Mike Hernandez (Daniela); grandsons Brandon and Marvin Hernandez; his brother
Rudy Ledesma; sisters Alice Walker; Carmen Barraza; and Patricia Dos Reis (Ed); brother-in-law Hans Hensel; and many nephews, nieces, and friends.
A Mourning Ceremony took place in Alzey, Germany on January 30, 2017. A Funeral service and burial of the urn was on February 10, 2017.
A Memorial Mass and Remembrance will be celebrated at St Patrick’s Catholic Church in Watsonville on Saturday February 18, 2017 at 1:00 in the afternoon.For the complete article see the 02-14-2017 issue.
