Bessie Blake, a longtime resident of Santa Cruz County, passed away on May 29, 2018 after a brief illness. She was 87 years old.

Bessie moved with her family to Santa Cruz in 1969, working as a registered nurse at Community Hospital and Dominican Hospital. She was active in her church as an elder, giving Bible studies, visiting the sick and shut-in and leading the Community Services Center. She served the needs of her community by providing food, clothing and other support to those in need. She was also a longtime volunteer for the Grey Bears in Watsonville.

A memorial service will be held for Bessie on July 28 at 4 p.m., at the Santa Cruz SDA Church, 1024 Cayuga St., Santa Cruz, CA 95062. Donations in Bessie’s memory may be made to the education fund at the Santa Cruz SDA Church at the address above, or to the Grey Bears, 2710 Chanticleer Ave., Santa Cruz, CA 95065.
