The Pajaro Valley High boys’ basketball team rallied, but ultimately fell short in a 64-60 loss to No. 12 Soledad High in the first round of the Central Coast Section Division III playoffs on Tuesday night.

Pajaro Valley was down 18-15 after the first quarter, and 32-21 at the half. But the Grizzlies chopped into the deficit over the final 16 minutes and made it a game late.

Sophomore guard Christian Quintero poured in 33 points in the loss. It was his fifth game this season with 30 points or more.

The Monterey Bay League Pacific division Freshman of the Year last season, Quintero finished his second high school campaign by scoring 25 points or more in five straight games, averaging 31 points per game in that span.

Pajaro Valley finished the season with a 13-12 record, and tied for third in the MBL-P with Christopher High at 7-5.

A third-place finisher in the Mission Trail Athletic League, Soledad (13-12) will advance to play at No. 5 Aptos High tonight at 7 p.m.

The Grizzlies will graduate five players from their roster of 14: Ryan Magbag, Tony Reyes, Jaylen Carreon, Edwin Chavez and Alex Mendoza.

Magbag, Reyes and Carreon were all a part of last year’s team that won 17 games and notched the program’s first postseason win since 2009.

Magbag made the varsity team as a freshman. Reyes and Carreon joined him the next year as sophomores.
