Strawberry Jam Fun Run to kick off Watsonville Strawberry Festival

WATSONVILLE — The first annual Strawberry Jam 1K/5K Fun Run/Walk will kick off the Watsonville Strawberry Festival on August 3 at Ramsay Park.

Put on by Friends of Watsonville Parks and Community Services, the run features a moderately hilly course that starts and ends at Ramsay Park and traverses Watsonville’s sloughs with an out and back section on Ohlone Parkway.

No dogs are allowed, but families and strollers are welcome. Register on Active.com or pick up a hard copy application at the Watsonville Parks and Community Services Department office, 231 Union St.

Races will be coordinated by the Santa Cruz Track Club. 

“We are thrilled to be able to offer this new fun run that will tie in with our famous Strawberry Festival that is both a benefit for our ongoing charitable efforts and a healthy and fun option for our community,” President of the Friends of Watsonville Parks and Community Services Alfonso Lobato said.

Check-in on race day begins at 6:45 a.m. at Ramsay Park parking lot. 

The Kids 1K Fun Run/Walk begins promptly at 7:45 a.m. Parents are welcome to join and guide their kids through the 1K run. 

The 5K Fun Run/Walk will follow for those of ages 12 and up starting at 8 a.m.

Pre-race stretches will be lead by Watsonville Yoga.

Over-the-counter building permits now available online

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY — The County of Santa Cruz recently announced the expansion of online permit processing to include over-the-counter building permits, allowing residents to submit plans and receive these permits without leaving home.

Eligible projects include routine work such as roofing replacements, window change-outs, siding, sheetrock, small remodels (with no alteration of walls), decks less than 30 inches above grade, minor electrical and plumbing work, mechanical (furnaces, air conditioning units, wall heaters, wood stoves, ducting, etc.), simple solar systems, electric vehicle charging systems, most demolitions and more.

Note that some projects located in coastal areas and some historic buildings may not be eligible for online permitting.

Watsonville-Mora High class of 1969 reunion

Watsonville and Mora high schools class of 1969 are celebrating their 50th Class Reunion on Aug. 23 at Severino’s Restaurant in Aptos.

Festivities start at 5 p.m.

The price is $85 per person.

Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program voucher

The Seniors Council will be visiting the Watsonville Farmers’ Market on July 12 to distribute vouchers for food purchase.

The $20 vouchers can be used at certified farmers’ markets to purchase fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, fresh herbs or honey. The vouchers are free to seniors who are 60 years or older and are considered low income (at or below $1,926 per month for a one person household, or $2,607 per month for a two person household).

Dog training classes

The non-profit Monterey Bay Dog Training Club have classes starting Tuesday in Watsonville and Thursday in Capitola.

The cost is $100 for an eight-week session.

Bay Federal Credit Union raises $11,285 for Big Brothers Big Sisters of SC County

CAPITOLA — Bay Federal Credit Union members and employees raised $11,285 for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Santa Cruz County during their annual Bowl for Kids’ Sake pledge drive.

Twenty-one teams of Bay Federal employees and their families filled the Boardwalk Bowl to support the organization and donate funds at the annual event. Bay Federal has participated in the Bowl for Kids’ Sake pledge drive for 28 consecutive years.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Santa Cruz County, which pairs adult volunteer mentors with at-risk youths in the community, uses the money to pay for operating costs and ongoing support for children and families in its program.
