Cooking Club features Croatian food

A wide array of prepared dishes from Croatia fill a table at the monthly Cooking Club on the second floor of the Watsonville Public Library Thursday evening. About 15 people attended the free potluck event that is headed up by Dolores Wiemers, reference and adult programming librarian. Guest speaker Cecilia Cervantes, operations manager at Loaves and Fishes, gave a brief explanation of how the food pantry in Watsonville functions. She was followed by Sandra Staka who gave a talk about Croatian cooking. She then gave a demonstration on how to prepare a penne pasta dish with shredded beef and chicken called Makarule. Other dishes on the table included Croatian chard and potatoes, scampi in garlic, tomatoes and white wine, and Croatian bean and sausage soup. Japanese food will be the theme at the May 24 meeting that takes place from 5:30-7:30 p.m. In June, Portuguese food will be featured.
