WATSONVILLE — Pedestrians walking through downtown Watsonville can now take a trip through time.
“Celebrating the Dignity of Labor,” a series of 16 mosaic medallions, has been recently completed and embedded in the sidewalks along three intersections on Main Street.
Watsonville artist Kathleen Crocetti was chosen by the city to create mosaics for the newly-expanded sidewalks from First Street to the Watsonville Plaza.
Each tiled medallion, placed in sequential order, represents a wave of immigrants Watsonville has seen over the years, and the work they were involved in, such as mustard growing for the Chinese and wheat for the Danish.
The design for the mosaics came from a series of community meetings Crocetti held earlier in the year, where she gathered input on how each group should be represented.
Once the designs were nailed down, Crocetti organized a number of events at the Watsonville Farmers Market, where community members were invited to help create the mosaics.
Crocetti said she was “really, really pleased” with the way the project turned out.
“I love them,” she said.
