Inmate dies in custody, cause unknown

WATSONVILLE — The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office launched an investigation after a man in custody at the Rountree Medium Facility of Santa Cruz County Jail died early Monday morning, SCSO Sgt. Dee Baldwin said.

Carlos Bolanos, 35, of Watsonville had been in custody since October, and was assigned to the rehabilitation and re-entry facility.

According to Baldwin, correctional officers responded to reports of an unresponsive inmate around 5:30 a.m.

Officers and on-site medical staff rendered aid while requesting paramedics.

Detectives have found no evidence of trauma or foul play, Baldwin said.

The County Mental Health Department is providing grief support resources to inmates at the facility.

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday by the forensic pathologist to determine the cause and manner of death, including toxicology analysis.
