The Cabrillo College Seahawks men’s basketball team traveled to Redding over the weekend to compete in the Shasta Tournament and returned with a win, a loss and a canceled game due to bad air quality.

The Seahawks (3-2) defeated the College of the Siskiyous Eagles, 64-59, in the first game played on Nov. 16, and dropped their final game of the tournament against Santa Rosa Junior College, 64-51, two days later.

Their Nov. 17 game against Diablo Valley College was canceled because of the Camp Fire burning near Chico.

Cabrillo withstood a second-half, 36-35 surge against the Eagles (0-6) to secure its third win of the year.

Avery Edwards, a sophomore center/forward from Gary, Indiana, filled up the stat sheet scoring 10 points, grabbing eight rebounds, blocking three shots, dishing out two assists and stealing a pass.

Guard Trey Whitley, a sophomore from Santa Cruz, lead all Cabrillo players with 14 points, four assists and five made free throws. Whitley shot three for seven from beyond the arc and currently ranks 14th in the state in 3-point shooting.

The Santa Rosa Bear Cubs (5-1) came back from a four-point deficit at the break to outscore the Seahawks 34-17 in the second half. 

Davon Northcutt, a sophomore forward from Aptos, led Cabrillo in scoring with 13 points. Northcutt also snatched four rebounds to go along with a steal and assist on the evening.

Gabe Mack, a freshman guard from Milwaukee, scored eight points off the bench including making a pair of 3-pointers. Mack made 50 percent of his 3-point attempts during the tournament.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Chabot 75, Cabrillo 62  – Cabrillo College fell to the visiting Gladiators, 75-62, on Nov. 15 at the Adobe Palace. Chabot (5-1) outscored the Seahawks (3-1) in every quarter of the contest.

Teal Maxiner, a sophomore guard from Aptos, lead the Seahawks in points with 19 and rebounds with seven. She also had four assists on the night.

Heleyna Hill, a sophomore guard from San Jose, scored 16 points, grabbed six boards and matched her teammate Maxiner with four assists.
