Letters to the Editor, Jan. 25: Time to rethink Trump’s tenure

Time to rethink Trump’s tenure

To the Editor,

How long are we, the U.S. public, going to put up with the despicable antics of President Donald Trump who insults immigrants, has strained foreign relationships with many of our allies and wants to put up a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border, spending millions of taxpayer dollars?

Here on the Central Coast, there is a shortage of very valuable and experienced agricultural workers. As a person who has grown up in an agricultural family I know how important trusted farm workers are.

Recently, I have attended several meetings focusing on immigration reform and have learned how some students in local schools are living day-to-day in fear of coming home to find a parent missing, i.e. sent back to their country of origin. These are people who work in the fields, in the hospitality industry or as domestic workers and make positive contributions to our communities. I suggest our community and agricultural leaders invite Mr. Trump to the Pajaro Valley to spend some time in all of the fields observing how important these workers are to our local, state and national economy.

Our daughter has just returned from a conference in Ethiopia. Her Food Security colleagues were appalled by the language our president used to describe African and Haitian immigrants. They quizzed her about the mindset of American citizens in electing Mr. Trump as president; she was very humiliated. It is time for us to seriously think of terminating the tenure of Mr. Trump. Impeachment is a strong word but, maybe, we should consider that option.

Offshore drilling is dirty and dangerous

To the Editor,

We all saw the risks of offshore drilling when the Deepwater Horizon offshore oil rig caught fire in 2010, spilling 200 million gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico, killing thousands of dolphins, sea turtles and other marine wildlife, and exposing cleanup workers and residents to toxic chemicals.

President Trump’s plan jeopardizes the safety, health, and way of life of our coastal communities.

If President Trump won’t reconsider his reckless proposal, I hope that our Senators, Governor and other elected leaders do everything in their power to stop it.
