Local authors celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month

WATSONVILLE — Two local authors will pay a visit to Kelly’s Books on Sept. 14 for an event celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month.

Both Linda Covella and Linda S. Gunther are authors who highlight Hispanic characters and history. Covella is a children’s and young adult author, while Gunther primarily writes for adults.

Covella had the idea for the event and reached out on social media for other authors who would be interested in participating.

“I’ve known about Hispanic Heritage Month for years and wanted to celebrate it,” she said. “I think it’s important to celebrate our country’s cultural diversity.”

Covella will be highlighting two of her books, both of which touch upon the history of Juan Bautista de Anza’s expedition from Mexico to California and the first settlers arriving in 1775. “Yakimali’s Gift,” a 2014 historical novel for ages 12 and up, follows a 15-year-old girl embarking on the journey to California.

Covella’s newly published children’s picture book, “The Power of a Dream,” is about Feliciana Arballo, a real person from history—who has a cameo in “Yakimali’s Gift.”

Covella said she enjoys writing for young readers, who are still developing their character.

“I love having kids and teens for an audience,” she said. “I’m always interested in their opinion and what they have to say.”

Gunther’s debut novel, “Ten Steps from the Hotel Inglaterra: A Woman’s Romantic Adventure in Havana, Cuba,” is meant for an older audience. It follows the story of Charlotte Sweeney, who travels to Havana while still reeling from her sister’s suicide. There she meets a mysterious man and gradually becomes embroiled in a dangerous mystery.

Gunther and Covella met online and worked together to organize the event at Kelly’s Books.

“I’m really excited to have her included,” Covella said. “It should be a nice time.”

The authors will be signing copies of their books and chatting with guests from 1-3 p.m. on Sept. 14. Light snacks will be offered, as well as a raffle for a chance to win signed copies of the books.
