Aptos, St. Francis both drop openers

The Monte Vista Christian fell 5-3 to the Salinas Cowboys in nine innings on Tuesday in Monterey Bay League Gabilan division play at Watsonville.

Dylan McPhillips hammered a two-run homer and Jackson Collins hit a double for MVC (4-3, 1-3), which hosts Christopher today at 4 p.m.

• Soquel 7, Aptos 1 - The Aptos Mariners dropped their Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League opener 7-1 to the Soquel Knight on Tuesday in Soquel.

Isaac Gonzales scored the Mariners’ (4-2-1, 0-1) lone run.

Aptos will try to bounce back on Friday at Harbor at 4 p.m.

• Harbor 9, St. Francis 6 - The St. Francis Sharks began their Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League season with a tough 9-6 loss to Harbor on Tuesday in Santa Cruz.

St. Francis (1-6, 0-1), the two-time defending SCCAL co-champ, plays at Santa Cruz on Friday at 4 p.m.

• Watsonville 4, Alisal 1 - Gio Gonzales tossed a complete-game, two-hitter and hit a two-run homer to lead Watsonville over Alisal, 4-1, on Monday in Monterey Bay League Pacific division action.

James Gomez Jr. hit a double and drove in a run for Watsonville.

D-LEAGUE BASKETBALL

• Oklahoma City 123, Santa Cruz 98 - The Santa Cruz Warriors’ six-game win streak came to a screeching halt on Tuesday night in a 123-98 loss to the Oklahoma City Blue.

Golden State Warriors’ assignee Damian Jones paced Santa Cruz (25-18) with 20 points and also grabbed five boards and Scott Wood added 18 points.

Santa Cruz returns home on Friday for the first game of a back-to-back against the Texas Legends. Friday night’s game is set for a 7 p.m. tip.

HS SOFTBALL

• SLV 8, MVC 4 - Gianna Vanni hit a triple, Holland Finn was 2-for-2 with a double, two RBIs and one run but it wasn’t enough for Monte Vista Christian in its non-league loss to San Lorenzo Valley on Tuesday.

MVC (5-4-1) had travels to San Lorenzo today to play Redwood Christian at 4:30 p.m.

JC BASEBALL

• Cabrillo 7, Monterey 0 - Alex Trautner threw six shutout innings in Cabrillo College’s 7-0 win over Monterey Peninsula College on Tuesday in Coast Conference Pacific play at Aptos.

Trautner allowed only one hit and three walks, while striking out seven. Cooper Krug went 2-for-4 and had three RBIs. Nick Ciandro, Adam Rossit and Kyle Swanson also drove in a run.

Cabrillo (13-8, 4-0) travels to Modesto College today at 2:30 p.m.
