WATSONVILLE — A Watsonville man was arrested on Nov. 22 in connection with the Sept. 11 collision that killed a bicyclist.

Jesus Castillo, 19, was charged with vehicular manslaughter. He was not in custody Monday, jail records showed.

Jennie Gervasio, 56, was killed as she rode her bicycle on Main Street near Auto Center Drive at about 6:30 p.m.

According to Watsonville Police Sgt. Donny Thul, Castillo was speeding when the collision occurred.

Police at the time said that the vehicle involved in the collision had a green light, and that Gervasio “came out of nowhere” into the path of the moving vehicle.

Police also said that criminal charges were not likely in the case.

They did not release a photo of Castillo, and declined further comment.

Gervasio’s daughter Geneve Valle said her mother was coming home from a shopping trip to Grocery Outlet when she was struck.

Valle said she was “somewhat relieved” by the charges, but said they came months after her mother was killed.

“I’m still skeptical,” she said. “This is basically opening the door for what’s to come.”

Valle said her mother’s body was left on the ground for six hours.

“I felt like I had to remind them that my mom was a human being,” she said. “But I am glad obviously that this person will have to face up to what he’s done.”
