WATSONVILLE — Watsonville police on Monday arrested a man who was carrying an assault rifle in his backpack.

Sergio Jimenez, 18, was charged with possession of an assault rifle. He was booked into Santa Cruz County Jail in lieu of $5,000 bail, jail records showed.

According to Watsonville Police spokeswoman Michelle Pulido, an officer was patrolling the slough in the area of Rodriguez Street at Rodriguez Way when he came across Jimenez at an illegal campsite.

The officer noticed that Jimenez had a large, long object between his back and his backpack, which turned out to be a rifle barrel. Inside Jimenez’s backpack were the remaining parts to the functional assault rifle.

The seizure was the sixth firearm that WPD officers have taken off the streets in less than a week, Pulido said. Since the beginning of the year, the department has recovered nearly 30 guns.
