On Saturday, April 6, 2019, Mariano Velazquez Nieves, loving father and grandfather, passed away at the age of 73.
Mariano was born in 1945 in Peñuelas, Puerto Rico, eldest son of Mariano Velazquez and Sixta Nieves. His family were traditional rural agricultural workers, harvesting sugar cane and coffee. In 1959 he immigrated to Watsonville, which became his life-long second home. He is survived by his sons, Mariano Jr. and Juan from former wife, Altagracia. He was preceded in death by his only daughter, Viviana. He is also survived by siblings, Roberto, Hector and Rosa, as well as his longtime companion, Patricia Moreno.
Mariano worked for the P.V.U.S.D for 27 years as a mechanic. He had a lifelong passion for cars and mechanics, especially projects involving bodywork and upholstery. He loved traditional Puerto Rican music and socializing with his many friends and family, who will deeply miss his big smile and loving advice.
A Celebration of Life event will be held Sunday, May 5 at 258 Vega Rd in Watsonville at 1pm.
