Monte Vista Christian freshman wrestler Christian Cabaug won the 113-pound division at Friday night’s Monterey Bay League Championships in Gilroy.

Cabaug stunned No. 2-seeded Nathan Aguilar, of Gilroy High, in the semis with a 6-5 decision and knocked off top-seeded Joe Delgado, of San Benito High, via 7-4 decision in the championship match.

M.V.C. had seven other wrestlers finish in the top five of their respective weight class and took fourth as a team with 140.5 points. Gilroy won the league title with 360 points.

M.V.C.’s Eddie Zamora (126 pounds) took second, Amit Klair (106) finished third, Amman Klair (138), Nathaniel Fernandez (220) and Anthony Shepherd (285) placed fourth and Andrew Ballard (195) and Mateo Montoya (120) wrestler their way to fifth.

Watsonville High’s Abel Pena finished second at 120 pounds, losing to Gilroy’s Nic Aguilar, the top-ranked wrestler in the state who is also ranked in the top 10 in the nation.

Fellow Wildcatz Joaquin Mosqueda (113) and Luke Meyers (145) finished fourth, while Tyson George (126) took fifth.

Pajaro Valley High’s Rigoberto Herrejon pinned Palma High’s Blake Cornell to take third at 195 pounds.

Irepan Romero (160), Alejandro Vasquez (220) and Juan Rodriguez (285) all placed fifth.

All of these local wrestlers will advance to the Central Coast Section Championships at Independence High in San Jose on Feb. 23-24.
