Men's JC Basketball: Hawks dominate Renegades in Page’s home opener

James Page’s first game in the Adobe Palace as interim head coach got off to a hot start, as his Cabrillo College Seahawks dominated the Ohlone College Renegades early and cruised to an 84-53 victory on Wednesday night.

Cabrillo (4-3) showcased explosive dunks, deep 3’s, lockdown defense and crisp ball movement as it jumped out to a commanding 27-3 lead over the first 15 minutes.

The Renegades (2-4) looked outclassed and helpless to stop the fast paced offense that exploited mismatches, and struggled to get shots off against the significantly longer team featuring sophomores Avery Edwards (6-foot-9), Trey Whitley (6-0) and Yeskin Williams (6-6).

Page recently stepped in for longtime coach Tony Marcopulos, who was forced to take a leave of absence because of health reasons.

Whitley, a Harbor High alumnus, guided the offensive attack scoring 10 points, handing out a game-high seven assists and pulling down five rebounds.

Edwards flirted with a double-double, finishing with 18 points and nine rebounds. He also made three assists and three blocks.

Davon Northcutt chipped in 13 points by hitting three of the Seahawks’ 12 3-pointers. He also pulled down six rebounds and made three steals.

The Seahawks host Cuesta College, Foothill College and Butte College in the 15th Annual Cabrillo College Classic this weekend in the Adobe Palace.

Cabrillo plays Cuesta on Saturday on Saturday at 7 p.m. and faces off against Butte on Sunday at 5 p.m.
