SOQUEL — Nearly 3,000 people in the Soquel area were without power Wednesday morning after an explosion and a fire in an underground utilities unit at about 9:40 a.m.

The explosion occurred in the area of 4768 Soquel Drive, near the post office and The Bagelry Restaurant.

Pacific Gas & Electric spokeswoman Mayra Tostado called the outage “weather-related.” She said that crews restored power to 90 percent of its customers within 30 minutes.

Central Fire Protection District also responded to the incident.

“We appreciate our customers’ patience while we work to turn the lights back on, and urge customers to stay safe during this weather event and report any downed power lines or damaged electric equipment to 800-743-5000,” Tostado said.
