Nicanor Fernandez Fernandez died on Monday, March 11, 2019. He was 87.
He was born on June 21, 1931 in Michoacán, Mexico to Antonio and Natalia Fernandez. At 7 years old, he was mentored by his father in training horses. He later met his wife Catalina and relocated to Watsonville from Mexico and gave his children the opportunity to become citizens, as well as himself.
He was a good man who worked hard to always provide for his family. He was a lifelong horse owner and trainer. He was requested for many years to be the leader and flag holder for Dia de la Virgen de Guadalupe.
He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Catalina Fernandez; his sons, Gustavo Fernandez, Conrado Fernandez, Rogelio Fernandez, and Rigoberto Fernandez, his daughters; Leticia Sanchez, Beatriz Fernandez, Carmen Fernandez, Elena Fernandez, and Elvia Fernandez; one brother and two sisters; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Wednesday, March 20 from 5-9 p.m. with a Rosary at 7 p.m. at Mehl’s Colonial Chapel. Mass will be held at Valley Catholic Church on Thursday, March 21 at 10 a.m. Burial to follow at Valley Public Cemetery. Mehl’s Colonial Chapel was entrusted with the arrangements.
