WATSONVILLE —Dust, leaves, cigarette butts, grime — it’s all part of the daily buildup on Watsonville’s sidewalks.

Chasing these things away is no easy task. That’s where the ec-H20 Battery Ride-On Floor Scrubber comes in.

Slightly larger than a sit-down lawn mower, the streamline gadget has fit into the City’s efforts to tidy downtown sidewalks.

Rex Rackley, a Utility III worker for the City of Watsonville, rode up and down a section of Main Street Wednesday, fulfilling his portion of a grid that includes portions of Main and East Beach streets, West Lake Avenue, Union and Alexander streets and others.

“It’s a very efficient machine,” Rackley said. “It’s quiet and the rotating brushes and vacuum do a complete job of cleaning and picking things up. And this definitely makes business owners happy.”

Rackley said the task of sidewalk cleaning is spread out among several workers over the week.
