Pedestrian dies after being struck by truck

WATSONVILLE—A 75-year-old man was fatally struck by a vehicle late Sunday morning on Rodriguez Street near West Beach Street in Watsonville.

The man, whose name has not yet been released, was hit by another man driving a Chevy Silverado on Rodriguez Street in front of the Watsonville Discount Mall at 11:21 a.m.

He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he eventually succumbed to his injuries.

Sgt. Donny Thul of the Watsonville Police Department was on scene with the agency’s Traffic Unit for hours following the crash. The section of Rodriguez Street was shut down until about 5 p.m.

Thul said it was too soon to tell the cause of the crash, but that they had ruled out drugs or alcohol. He added that the driver was fully cooperative with investigators and law enforcement.

The incident remains under investigation.
