Police: man had drugs for sale at River Street camp

SANTA CRUZ — A Santa Cruz man living in the sprawling homeless encampment on River Street was arrested Thursday after he was found with heroin and methamphetamine in his tent.

Juan Lopez, 43, was charged with possession of illegal drugs for sale and a probation violation. He was booked into Santa Cruz County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail, jail records showed.

The arrest came when the Santa Cruz County Anti-Crime Team (SCCACT) conducted a foot patrol at the encampment at 650 River St in Santa Cruz.

Officers contacted Lopez, who they knew to be on probation with search terms, and found 69 grams of Heroin and 42 grams of Methamphetamine, along with a digital scale, underneath a floorboard, said SCCACT Commander George Rivera.

Officers also recovered more than $1,300 in cash.

“Gang Task Force Officers will be continuing to conduct random foot patrols of the encampment and surrounding areas to deter illegal activity,” Rivera said.

Anyone with information on this case or any other gang or narcotic related case is asked to call SCCACT at 454-2320.
