Suspect flees when man fights back with cane

WATSONVILLE — Watsonville police are looking for a suspect who robbed an elderly man as he left the Popeye's Louisiana Kitchen chicken restaurant late last month.

Surveillance footage showed the victim using his cane as he tried to fight off the attack, which occurred in broad daylight, Watsonville Police spokeswoman Michelle Pulido said.

According to Pulido, the victim was leaving the restaurant on the 500 block of Auto Center Drive when the suspect snuck up from behind and tried to take his wallet and car keys.

The man tried to stop the suspect with his cane but fell to the ground. The suspect ran away and left the busy shopping center on a bike, Pulido said.

Witnesses describe the suspect as a man in his 20s with combed back hair. He was wearing a black T-shirt and blue jeans.

The victim was treated and released from the hospital for minor injuries.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Ely Uretsky at 768-3356 or call the non-emergency number at 471-1151.
