Runaway golf cart injures five at U.S. Open

PEBBLE BEACH — A runaway golf cart injured five people Friday during the U.S. Open Championship after a box fell onto the accelerator.

The incident occurred at 10:15 a.m. on the 16th fairway of the Pebble Beach Golf Links.

According to California Highway Patrol Officer Jessica Madueño, a vendor was making a delivery with the golf cart, which was loaded with boxes. The vendor parked and walked away from the golf cart, and a box on the front seat fell onto the floor and landed on the accelerator.  The unoccupied golf cart began moving forward, injuring the driver and four spectators, who range from 25–82 years old.

The vendor removed the box from the accelerator and the golf cart came to a complete stop.

Two spectators were taken to Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula.
