MONTEREY COUNTY — The woman who is suspected of causing a crash that killed three women Friday has been charged with several felonies and booked into Monterey County Jail.
Hilda Beatriz Valencia, 28, was charged with gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, causing injury while intoxicated and causing injury to multiple people, all felonies. She also faces misdemeanor charges for possession of illegal drug paraphernalia, jail records showed.
Valencia is in custody in lieu of $1 million bail.
According to California Highway Patrol Officer Jessica Madueño, the suspect was driving a brown Chevrolet Malibu southbound on San Miguel Canyon Road just before 6 a.m. when she veered into the oncoming lane.
The driver of a white Chevrolet HHR van, which held three passengers, attempted unsuccessfully to avoid the Malibu. The three passengers died on the scene, and the driver was taken to Natividad Medical Center with serious injuries.
According to Madueño, only the passenger in the right rear seat was not wearing a seatbelt.
Two GoFundMe accounts were established by family members of the victims in the hours following the deadly crash.
