WATSONVILLE — The Parks and Community Services Department Summer Aquatics Program, held at the Watsonville High School pool, is up and running. The program consists of swimming lessons and recreational open swim available to the public, and is geared for all ages and all levels of swimming skills.

Classes include Beginners I, II, III, Intermediate, Super Tots, Water Babies and Parents and Tots.

Parents and Tots is designed to introduce the inexperienced or fearful infant or child to the water. Parents actively participate in the class by teaching the skills shown by the instructor.

The objective of Water Babies is to help parents and participants feel comfortable in the water and to enjoy the water safely. Parents and participants will learn how to enter and exit the pool safely, hold their breath, blow bubbles, and put their face in the water.

Jessica Mattos, who manages the program, said skilled instructors can help people learn the basics of water safety and teach those that are terrified of even getting in the water to overcome their fear and gain a comfortable level of safe swimming.

“The main thing is the program is designed for the public to come out and have a good time,” Mattos said.

Angelica Curiel said she really appreciates the program and feels it offers a good way for her 10-year-old son to learn water safety.

“They really have a nice program and we feel welcome here,” she said.
