PRUNEDALE —Three people were killed in a head-on crash on the 300 block of San Miguel Canyon Road early Friday, California Highway Patrol Officer Jessica Madueño said.

Hilda Valencia Flores, 27, from Salinas, is suspected of driving while intoxicated in connection with the crash, Madueño said.

The victims have been identified.

According to Madueño, the suspect was driving a brown Chevrolet Malibu southbound on San Miguel Canyon Road just before 6 a.m. when she veered into the oncoming lane.

The driver of a white Chevrolet HHR van, which held three passengers, attempted unsuccessfully to avoid the Malibu.

The three passengers died on the scene, and the driver was taken to Natividad Medical Center with serious injuries.

Flores also suffered serious injuries and was taken to a trauma center.

David Mellentine, who lives across from the site of the crash, said he was awoken by a “dead solid whack.”

“I was sound asleep and I heard a loud bang that woke me up,” he said. “I came out and saw enough.”

San Miguel Canyon Road, a heavily travelled corridor between Hall Road and Highway 101, was closed during the investigation.

The collision occurred between Hamby Lane and Mark Ryan Estates.
