Two suspected gang members linked to a shooting late Monday night were arrested after trying to elude police, Watsonville Police spokeswoman Michelle Pulido said.
Officers received reports of several shots fired in the area of Rodriguez and Fifth Street at about 11:35 p.m.
They arrived within a minute, and as they canvassed Rodriguez Street, two men standing in front of a home ran from them. The officers chased them and quickly arrested 18-year-old Nathan Becerril, who was hiding under a car.
The second runner was jumping fences towards Kilburn Street, where another officer saw 26-year-old Ismael Rodriguez trying to hide behind some shrubs, Pulido said.
Rodriguez, a convicted felon, refused to cooperate with officers and ignored all their commands, Pulido said. He was arrested after a brief struggle.
Police recovered a loaded pistol that Rodriguez allegedly dumped on Kilburn Street when he was running. Investigators believe the pistol is the same one used in the shooting.
Becerril was booked into county jail for delaying the investigation and for participating in a criminal street gang.
Rodriguez was arrested for being a felon in possession of a firearm, participating in a criminal street gang and resisting arrest.
Both men were was booked into Santa Cruz County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bail.
Police do not believe anyone was injured during the shooting. Anyone with information is asked to call 471-1151.
