Wallace “Wally” R. Roberts

Wallace “Wally” R. Roberts died peacefully with his family at his side June 29, 2019.

Born in Modesto in 1929 to A.L. (Bob) and Rose Roberts, they moved to Watsonville in 1928 to buy Traller Furniture, which eventually became Roberts’ Floor Coverings.

At 18, just after high school graduation in 1942, he enlisted into the Army Air Corps. He earned his wings, became First Lieutenant as a pilot and returned home before he was 21 years old.

Flying out of Italy, his B24 Bomber took part in 50 missions over Hitler’s Europe. The Czech Republic has given many honors to the 464th Bomb Group and to Roberts’ 777th Squadron.

After the war, Roberts was part of many organizations in Watsonville and was considered the “Local War Hero.” He leaves his wife of seventy-one years, Marie, his three children Rob, Marsha and Jim, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, and daughter-in-law Carol.
