STANISLAUS NATIONAL FOREST — A Watsonville man was shot and killed Thursday after he reportedly broke into a tent in Stanislaus National Forest at Deadman’s Campground.

The Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office said that a man and his girlfriend were asleep in their tent when an “unassociated” 36-year-old Watsonville man entered the tent around 2 a.m. The woman woke up to the Watsonville man on top of her. She yelled to wake up her boyfriend who was next to her in the tent. During the ensuing confrontation, the Watsonville man was shot, causing his death, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The Sheriff’s office on Tuesday identified the suspect as Timothy Edward Smith.

Investigators are working closely with the District Attorney’s office on this case. No arrests have been made.

The shooting occurred at the campground off of Hwy 108 near Kennedy Meadows Road. When First Responders arrived a man was found dead. Involved parties are cooperating with the investigation and there are no outstanding suspects, officers said.

The investigation is ongoing.
