WATSONVILLE — Watsonville High School’s seniors displayed their Community Action Projects (CAP) to the community on Thursday and Friday, showing off yearlong projects that ranged from feeding hungry people to cleaning up their campus to encouraging bike safety.

The CAP projects were launched as a way to encourage young people to expand their horizons by reaching out into their community. The students are responsible for every aspect of the projects, from concept to execution.

A team of two young women created the “Santa Paws Project,” for which they worked with the Monterey SPCA and encouraged their community to spay and neuter their pets.

Another team volunteered as “reading buddies” at Starlight Elementary School.

For “The Wish List,” Jessica Vega and Marlen Hernandez raised money by selling chocolates, and used the money to purchase supplies for Monarch Services. The duo said they were inspired by the organization’s mission, which among other things addressed dating violence among college-aged people.

Vega and Hernandez said they hope their project will inspire others to donate to the organization.

“We basically donated over $200,” Vega said.
