SANTA CRUZ — A Watsonville man was struck and killed by two cars early Saturday morning on Highway 1 in Santa Cruz.

California Highway Patrol officer Sam Courtney said the man was hit in the northbound lanes near the Emeline Avenue exit at 4:40 a.m. in dark and wet conditions. Courtney said the man was first struck by a 2018 Toyota driven by a 27-year-old San Jose man. The victim was then struck by a Ford F250 pickup driven by a 43-year-old Santa Cruz man.

Sheriff deputies and Santa Cruz Police aided the CHP in shutting down all northbound lanes for about three hours. The 44-year-old victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

No other injuries were reported.

The incident is still under investigation, Courtney said.
